Then use the tools present in the program editor: at the top you will find the menus for controlling files, the list of effects and the functions to generate silences, noises, etc .; a little further down there are the buttons for controlling the playback of the imported songs and for carrying out basic editing operations; further on you will find the audio graphs and the volume control bars, the buttons to cut and / or paste portions of audio tracks and set the zoom level of the graphs; in the last line, on the other hand, there are the menus for selecting the audio source and for choosing the number of channels; at the bottom of the window, on the other hand, there are menus and buttons to adjust the frequency of the audio in Hz and to set the starting and ending points of the selection.
Once your music recording is complete, save the final result as an audio file by clicking on the menu Fillet at the top left, choosing the item Export and indicating the output format. Instead, if you want to save everything as a project, so that you can continue working on it at a later time, you can do it by always clicking on the menu Fillet but by subsequently selecting the item Save project. LMMS (Windows / macOS / Linux)
LMMS is another PC music recording program that you can put to the test. It is a free software, open source and running on Windows, macOS and Linux, which offers advanced editors for melody and beat tracks, effects, sounds and preset rhythm bases, tools for recording and numerous other useful tools for creating musical compositions. various. In short, it has absolutely nothing to envy to the most noble paid solutions.
To download the program on your computer, go to its website, click on the button Download now and, in the new page that is shown to you, click on blue button with the name of the operating system that you find under the heading Stable Versions.

Subsequently, you can start using the program editor, which is divided as follows: at the top you find the toolbar with the commands to show and hide the effects mixer, the automation editor, the project notes, etc. .; on the left there is the bar to access instrumental plugins, sounds and projects; while in the center there is the editor for positioning the songs and melodic bases, the section for inserting the beats and all the other instruments called up.
When you have finished your music creation, save the audio file by clicking on the menu Fillet, choosing the voice from the latter Export and selecting the output format. To save your music recording as a project instead, after clicking on the menu Fillet select the item Save attached to it.
GarageBand (macOS)
Stai using MacOS and none of the resources I have already reported to you has particularly convinced you, I strongly suggest that you consider using GarageBand. It is, in fact, one of the best programs to record music on Mac. It is free, was developed directly by Apple and is available only for computers produced by the company. It allows you to both create and edit music, taking advantage of the tools available and the digital musical instruments offered, as well as connecting real ones to your computer.
It comes pre-installed on all newer Macs, but if not, it can be downloaded from the Mac App Store. To be able to use it, start the program by selecting the relevant one icon present in Launchpad.
In the window that opens, click on the entry Empty project that you find in the section New project, then press the button Choose placed at the bottom. Next, choose the type of track you want to create by selecting the corresponding button, and click the button Crea. If, on the other hand, you want to import an existing audio file, drag it into the program window.
To record your musical creation, then use the buttons and items in the program editor: at the top center you will find the buttons for playback and for recording; on the right are those for adding loops and other multimedia elements; on the left you will find the buttons to cut the audio, to access the library and controls; further to the left is the list of added audio tracks; at the bottom there are the functions related to the setting of the tracks, the controls for adjusting the equalization, the reverb and so on; in the center, however, you will find the tracks.
When you have finished your music recording, export the final result as an audio track by clicking on the menu sharing at the top left and choosing one of the available export options. As I told you at the beginning of the guide, if you do not want or cannot download new software on your computer, you can consider relying on programs to record free music online. If you are interested in this, please continue reading: you will find listed below those that in my opinion represent the most reliable in the category.
Audio tool
The first among the programs to record music available online that I invite you to consider is Audio tool. It is a music mixer that more or less faithfully replicates the real ones. Works from any browser, but requires the use of Flash Player installed on your computer to work (for more information, you can consult my guides on how to install and activate the plugin). It is completely free, but requires the creation of a specific account to be used.
To use Audiotool, visit its home page and click the button Sign Up - Its' free which is on the right. Then create your account, filling in the form that is proposed with the requested data and following the instructions on the screen.
After registration, click on the button Enter Studio located at the top of the service page, then select the option New Project to kick off your music recording.
Therefore, use the editor offered by the service as you see fit: in the lower part you will find the button to add the audio tracks and the commands for managing the time and viewing the timeline; on the right, on the other hand, are the instruments and effects to use; while in the center you will find all the various tools you have chosen to use and the relative commands.
When you want, you can start playback by pressing the button Play located at the bottom. If you are satisfied, you can publish your creation on the Audiotool network by clicking on the menu Project located at the top left and selecting the item Publish from the latter. To save everything in the form of an editable project later, however, always click on Project and choose the item Save.
Soundation
Another solution you can consider employing is Soundation. It is one of the best programs to record music at home using the browser. In fact, it features a highly intuitive user interface and offers over 700 loops and various virtual musical instruments. To use it, however, you need to create a special account. Basically it is free, but paid plans are also available (starting from € 1,99 / month) that allow you to take advantage of extra features.
To use Soundation, go to the main page of the service and click on the link Sign Up located at the top right. Next, click on the button Get Free and fill in the fields on the screen to proceed with the creation of your account.

Once you have finished your music recording, save the project to your account by clicking on the button Save placed at the top. If you wish, you can also export the composition to your computer in MP3 format by clicking on the menu Fillet at the top left and clicking on the item Audio export da quest'ultimo.
Programs to record professional music
Let's move on to the professional music recording programs. In the following list you will find those that in my opinion represent the best solutions for industry experts.
- FL Studio (Windows / macOS) - program through which you can compose music, using the many integrated audio samples and tools available, as well as using existing audio files. It can be used in several versions, which differ in the tools offered and functionalities. It is paid (with prices starting from 89 euros). - Cubase (Windows / macOS) - historical cross-platform program that looks like a virtual recording studio through which you can perform MIDI and audio editing operations. It is available in three paid variants (with prices starting from 99,99 euros), which differ in functionality and tools included.
- Abelton (Windows / macOS) - digital music production software, valid for both live and studio use. It is available in different paid versions (with prices starting from 79 euros), which differ from each other in the features offered.
- Logic Pro X (macOS) - program developed by Apple for Mac only, useful for composing, editing and mixing professional audio. It includes a huge collection of instruments, loops and effects. It is paid (costs 229,99 euros).
App to record music
To conclude, as they say, I want to point out the ones that I believe to be the best app to record music present on the square, both as regards the Android side and as regards the iOS / iPadOS one. You will find them indicated in the list below.
- BandLab (Android / iOS / iPadOS) - free application with a strong social component thanks to which you can create music on the go. It allows, in fact, to record many different tracks, thanks to the numerous virtual instruments and the rich library of rhythms and loops. It also allows you to record the sound of the instruments and the voice.
- Music Maker JAM (Android / iOS / iPadOS) - famous application for recording music, using the many effects and tools available. Note that it also offers a special feature to share your compositions with other users. It's free, but to unlock extra content you need to make in-app purchases (at a base cost of 3,99 euros).
- WalkBand (Android) - solution available only for Android devices through which you can play various musical instruments directly from the device screen. It's free, but it also offers in-app purchases (at a base cost of 75 cents) to unlock extra features.
- GarageBand (iOS / iPadOS) - is the version for iPhone and iPad of the macOS program that I told you about in the step at the beginning of the guide. It incorporates all its main functions, but is optimized for the touch screen.
