How to record a video call from a PC
Bandicam
The first program I recommend you download is Bandicam as this software allows you to record audio and video from your computer based on the area set by the user. It is distributed on the Windows platforms in a free and you can download it via the following link. You can also decide to purchase a license to unlock the recording minute limit (in the free the limit is 10 minutes) and to remove the watermark imprinted on the video.
After clicking on the link I gave you, which takes you back to the official website, click on the button Download, in the horizontal menu at the top. You will then be directed to the section Download of the website, where you will have to click on the red button Download Bandicam. This will open a new screen where the download of the installation file will start automatically.
After downloading the file, double-click on it and then click the button Yes, from the window of User Account Control Windows. In the installation window, select the language cityno and click sul pulsating OK. Then click the buttons NEXT, Accept, yet NEXT and to conclude, Install e end.
If Bandicam hasn't opened automatically, click its desktop icon. In the main screen of the program, you must now select one of the buttons to set the video capture area. You can choose to capture video from your webcam or any external source (Device registration) or a game screen (Game registration). Since your intent is instead to record a video call, you will then have to select one of the two buttons shown on the screen: Rectangular area or Full screen.
If you choose the latter option, your entire desktop and all windows that are open at the time of registration will be registered; choosing the option instead Rectangular area, which I recommend, you can define a predetermined area of your screen, in which everything that will appear inside it will be recorded.
Then click Rectangular area to bring up a box; then click on the icon with the symbol of a triangle, in the upper left corner of the box. You will be shown a context menu where you will have to select the item Dimension and then Custom size.
It then indicates the values of the size of the box that must contain the video call screen; then click Ok to define the area of the rectangle. Then drag the rectangle over the current window of the program with which you are making the video call and then click on the button Rec.
The box will now have a red border to indicate that registration is in progress. You can pause the recording at any time by clicking the button Pause (symbol with two vertical lines) or stop recording by clicking on the button Stop (symbol of a square).
When you are done recording, you will find the video inside the folder Bandicam, found in Documents Windows. If you want to customize the settings, you can use the tab General, FPS e Video.
Other programs for recording a video call
To record a video call on your computer, you can then solve the problem quickly by installing software to take screenshots of your desktop. The program that I indicated in the previous paragraph is one of these, but there are many others that you can use. Here are some that might be right for you.
- Snagit (Windows / macOS) - is a software to record the items that appear on the monitor and is available at payment on both Windows and macOS. You can use it to record the entire desktop or a portion of it, thus being able to perfectly crop the video call area. If you want to give it a try free, you can download the trial version and then evaluate its functionality.
- Ecamm Call Recorder (macOS) - is available in two versions: one for Skype and one for FaceTime. Each of these integrates with their respective programs to record video calls made. If you are interested, you can download it at payment or try the version free for the evaluation of its functionality.
- Camtasia (Windows / macOS) - is video editing software that has a screen recording feature. This software is available on both Windows and macOS, upon purchase of a license paid. You can, however, download an evaluation version and check if it is suitable for your needs.
- Skype (Windows / macOS) - if your intention is to record video calls made on Skype, you must know that, starting from version 8, the famous VoIP software from Microsoft allows you to do this natively: just press the button + located at the bottom right and select the appropriate item from the menu that opens. How to record a video call from smartphones and tablets
Android
On smartphones and tablets with Android operating system, you can record a video call through external applications or through the internal functionality of your device, if present.
Not all Android devices have a default function for screen recording; in this regard, in this guide of mine I will talk to you about how to use the feature Record screen as this is present on the device I own (a Huawei smartphone).
To activate the native recording feature, swipe your finger from top to bottom at the top edge of your device screen. You will be shown the Notification Center and buttons for quick execution of some features. Then tap on the icon indicating the wording Record screen and wait for the end of the short countdown to start the video recording.
By carrying out this procedure during a video call, it will be recorded and then saved in the memory of your device. If you do not have a native feature for screen recording, then you can use applications designed for the purpose. One of these is AZ Screen Recorder, available for free in the Android Play Store.
From your device, then tap on the link I provided you to directly open the Play Store; then presses the button Install, wait for the download and installation of the app to finish and press the button apri, to start the latter.
Once the application is started, you will be shown icons on the side of the screen. Then tap the button Settings and verify that the option Record audio is active. After verifying that the option is active, tap on back arrow to return to the main screen of your mobile.
Now start the video call with your favorite application and then tap onicon of AZ Screen Recorder you see on the side of your screen. Then tap on the red icon with the symbol of a video camera and, in the screen that opens, presses the button Start now. A countdown will then start, at the end of which the recording will start.
To stop recording, open the Notification Center of your Android device, with a swipe from top to bottom, at the top edge of the screen, and tap the button Pause or on the button Stop.
Please note: if you want to record a video call of Skype, know that you can do this directly using the official application of the service for Android. All you have to do is press the button + present on the chat screen and select the item Start recording give the menu check if you press.
iOS
Instead, to start recording a video call on iPhone o iPad, you can use the built-in function within iOS. To activate it, from the main screen of your device, tap on the icon Settings; then scroll through the items and select the one indicating the wording Control Center. After tapping on it, then tap on the item Customize controls.
On this screen, locate the feature Screen recording do tap sul green button next to it, to add it to yours Control Center.
Now, start the video call with your favorite application and then swipe from bottom to top at the bottom edge of your device screen. You will then be able to see a new icon with a circle inside it: tap on it and wait for the end of the short countdown to start recording. Then exit the Control Center to record everything that appears on the screen, including your video call.
To block the registration, you will have to reach the again Control Center and tap on record button.
Please note: if it is your intention to record a video call of Skype, know that you can do this using the official application of the service for iOS. All you have to do is press the button + present on the chat screen and select the item Start recording give the menu check if you press.
